Today I enjoyed: Lady Bird.
Lady Bird is a beautiful - both cinematically and story-wise - coming of age story. The young Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson lives in the city of Sacramento with her financially struggling family and tries to make her way surrounded by wealthier schoolmates in a catholic girls school.
The movie is the picturesque story of a young woman on her way to adulthood, with all the typical tropes, like fights with her parents, sneaking out to go partying, first love, first heartbreak and the lingering fear of what the future might hold. But for me, it never drags or gets dull, the storytelling is compelling and while an adult observer can see most of the obvious issues and flaws of the characters, it is still oddly mesmerizing. For example the protagonist chooses to use the title-providing name "Lady Bird", instead of her birth name Christine as an act of rebellion against her mother, to whom she has a very tense relationship.
This is not a feel good movie at all, but I really liked to be pulled into this young woman's world and follow the bumpy road she is taking.
I guess what I am trying to say is this: If you are in the mood for a down to earth coming of age story with great cinematography and an emotional ending, then this is definitely a must-watch movie!
